Staying Green

Our Footprint on the Environment

At JamHill, wellness, relaxation, and smiles are our priority, which is why we intend to do our best to minimise the impact we have on our planet.

We have a series of steps we take to achieve this, from turning off the lights when we leave the room to switching to more sustainable, compostable packing materials and operating an electric forklift for moving stock around. It’s also why we don’t sell cheap, low-quality products because we want to try to encourage consumers to invest in well-made products that are hard-wearing and will have a longer life.

In 2021, we made the switch to completely plastic-free outer packaging. All the materials used to ship our orders are now compostable, like our potato starch bags, or recyclable like our boxes and paper packing tape. This means we can divert thousands of pounds of plastic from the landfill every year and lower our impact on the environment. We may still ship products that come wrapped in plastic from our suppliers, but this is an ever reducing number and we predict this will soon stop, as more and more brands are making the switch to alternative packaging.

We are based in Cornwall, one of the top locations for nature and wildlife lovers in the UK, so we are constantly made aware of the impact human activity has on the natural environment and how it can affect its beauty and wildlife.

Thousands of tourists flock to the coastline every year, and many of them are people like you, our customers, which is why we understand if you are concerned about how our activities impact the place where you choose to unwind and find joy.

While we enjoy seeing our customers’ footprints in the sand and on the hiking trails, putting their new purchase to good use, we try to minimise our own footprint on the environment by implementing a series of steps towards a more sustainable day-to-day activity.

As a team, we aim to operate as eco-consciously as possible, from reducing waste in our offices and recycling as much as we can, to switching to compostable packaging and championing brands who make their own contributions to the cause whenever we get the chance.

We are committed to doing our part for the environment, which is why Sandal Shop is now a member of the Surfers Against Sewage 250 Club. We are hoping to support more charities in the future and will post regular updates.

Our Commercial Recycling Scheme

Plastic has many beneficial uses for human life. But single-use plastic packaging is an example of a wasteful way in which it’s still being used. That’s why we’ve started the Commercial Recycling Scheme.

As part of the Commercial Recycling Scheme, all of our shops offer customers the option to remove all the unnecessary bits of plastic packaging from orders (unless they’re there to protect the products during shipping or maintain hygiene) so that consumers don’t have to deal with them at home.

We’re seeing a positive shift starting to take place in our supply chain, but these changes can’t happen overnight, which is why we’ve decided to take the matter into our own hands until that happens.

The plastic packaging we’re removing cannot be recycled through domestic waste management, but we have access to a commercial recycling facility. We make sure these plastics make their way to these facilities where they are transformed back into raw materials such as plastic pellets and reused, diverting them from landfills or ending up in our oceans.

The JamHill Commercial Recycling Scheme

When placing an order on our website, customers will be prompted to choose whether they want the unnecessary plastic packaging to be removed from their order. Their items will be shipped in recyclable and compostable packaging, so they don’t have to worry about their plastic footprint anymore!

The only time we will not remove plastic from an order is if this has the potential to damage the items while they’re being shipped.

A lot of companies talk about being more environmentally friendly, but to us, this is more than a marketing ploy. There’s something personal in it for us. Our headquarters are located in Cornwall, so we get to see the impact of plastic pollution up close and personal every day, and we want it to stop. We’re here to show it can be done.
